Google Docs

In our classroom we are using Google Docs. In google Docs we can make documents, spreadsheets, drawings, presentations and share it with other people. When you share with other people you can let them comment, edit and can view. You can also chat while writing or editing some one’s writing piece, but only if you have permission to.

Google Docs is where your teacher can create a test that only he\she can edit but if you copy the document, you can edit it by putting in the right answers, then you give your teacher the power to edit it so he\she can fix mistakes and give you a grade. You can make a collection so that you click on it and all of your documents, spreadsheets, drawings and presentations under that title will show up so you can choose one of them to work on. In your Docs, if you throw accidentally throw out a Doc (put it in the trash), there is a tool called trash where you can see what you threw out and either clear the trash or bring it back. You can also look at collections that come with google docs like items you own (not items that were shared with you), all of your or some one who shared it with you item, your main page, items that you starred, or the trash collection. You can see the History of your revision and pull it up. If you accidentally delete all or some of your words and you save it if you click under File then scroll down to revision history, then click on it and you will see all of your revision history. Click on the one you want then exit it out of revision history.

In our classroom every morning, we have to sign in by using morning message. It is on the smart board. All of the messages are different (unless we have a band day which is only on Thursday). Today’s morning message was use an adjective or one phrase to describe the scene outside our classroom window. Every day, in math we do a math problem called a Do Now. It is going to be fractions because that is our subject right now. We sometimes have math home work. Our math home work last night was bringing home a recipe that one of our relatives made and say what it reminded us of. We made our own cartoons to show an example of PEMDAS and Integers. We also made our own math games.

We all have our own google accounts that we made our own blogs with. We have friends from Canada. They are called epals. With our google accounts we can blog, email ,create docs, see calendar, see sites and make or watch a video. We have friends from Canada. They are called epals. We write online messages to them and we haven’t seen them yet. Some of our epals live in Toronto. Some live in the Newfoundland area. In our classroom we also are working on writing. In are writing we are working on a giver project which is create your own Utopian society. We used google Sketch up to make 3-D models of things that are in our society.

First 2011-2012 Class Newsletter By Robert And Jalyn

we had indoor recces one day.

Writing: In writing, we have been working on paragraph writing. The class has been given a prompt “The worst vacation ever would be...” we have to write it on an outline, then we type it on pages. After that we have to paste it to the blog and comment on others work. Our next prompt is “If I could be a cool super-hero to be would be ...”

Reading: In Reading on Monday we picked an animal in the rain-forest to research. Then we had to write down why we would want to be that animal for a day and draw it. Then we shared it with the class. On Wednesday we started reading group. We are reading a book called powwow in the p.m reading. In a.m reading they are reading about the solar system.

Music: In music we have been working on making an uploaded twinkle twinkle little star sound awesome on garageband. We have to make it into A.B.A form. Both the A parts have to be the same instrument and the B part must be different. Then we sang a Justin Beiber song, reviewed how to read music and danced to double dream hands.

Tech: We have been working on web literacy. We have talked about what a url is. We have also learned how to use a Prezi. We also learned how to evaluate web sites to tell if they are reliable.

Morning work...
In morning work, we answered the question everyday. We have worked on our Prezis and jobs. Then we do morning meeting. Every Thursday the advanced band has band.

Kinder Buddies: This week was the first week with our kinder buddies. We taught them to use computers and we read to them on and off the computer.

Math: In math we have been working on adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers. One way to add negative and positive numbers is o find the absolute value. There is also a way to add negative numbers together. We learned that you have to add the negative numbers like they are positive and when you get the answer you add the negative sign. Finally, we reviewed how to add positive numbers.

Library:In library we signed out books and we used Sentios. We took a test on them to see what we knew. We also did this cool alphabetical sheet! We had to put the subjects in A,B,C order.

Gym: In gym we started our soccer unit. We played three games they were called Coconut, Traffic Jam, and more games like that We also played a game were we got a number and when Mrs. Gross called our number we would run up to the ball (which was in the middle) and tried to make a goal.

Writing

In writing we have been working on Narrative Poetry.   During our Narrative Poetry time we have been watching the videos and analyzing song lyrics like “White Horse” by Taylor Swift, “In The End” by Licoln Park, “Travelin’ Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks, and “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” by Will Smith. We have been watching these videos so we have examples of narrative poems. Another reason we have been watching these videos, is to look for Poetry Devices!
The storyline of “White Horse” is about Taylor Swift who is dating a guy, and they are in love. Then her friend tells her friend tells her boyfriend is cheating on her, then she dumps him. “In The End” by Lincoln Park is about a former girlfriend and how she was mocking her boyfriend, picking on him & more.  He tells her that he wrote this song to remind himself why he won’t go back to her, and that she was a waste of his time! The last song “Travelin' Soldier” is about a pretty girl, with a bow in her hair, who was a waitress. Then a Traveling Soldier comes in, and asks her to sit with him, because he was feeling low. Then she said “I'm off in an hour, I know where we can go” Then they went up on a peir and fell in love, he asked her if he could write to her when he goes to Vietnam. She said yes, then when she went to a football game, when they were naming off the people there was a name that was called that nobody cared about. Except a girl with a bow in her hair. The “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” by Will Smith is about Will Smith living in West Philadelphia. When he was playing basketball, some guys who were making trouble in his neighborhood started beating him up. Then his mom got a little scared, and told him he was going to live with his auntie and uncle in Bel-Air.
Our next step in writing is to begin writing our own narrative poem using everything we have learned this past week.

“The Giver”

In class we have been reading “The Giver” by Lois Lowry.  In the book you don’t have a birthday you are just called ones, twos,  threes and so on. But there are ceremonies every time you get older. The last ceremony that you have is turning a 12. Then you are an adult! Also you are given your spouses, and you can only have two kids. But you don’t have the babies there is birth mothers that have the babies. But the birth mothers don’t get to see the babies, that they have. Also when you turn eight, you have to volunteer, at places. Like the Old House, The Nurturing Center, and many more. If you don’t do so many hours then when you turn a twelve, then you won’t get your job or assignment, and have anyone clap for you. There is a rumor that one kid didn’t do enough volunteer hours and he didn't get his assignment! When he did finish his hours he got his assignment privately, and nobody clapped for him.

These are some of the things that we have read about.
